Talking About Politics: Why are Trump loyalists claiming victory even though Mueller's report is not public?
Why are so many Trump supporters acting like the Mueller investigation ending is a victory and proof of Trump’s innocence; when the findings of the report have yet to be made public, and any actions against Trump have not been decided yet?
There are several reasons why I believe that many Trump supporters are either literally or figuratively high-fiving themselves in the belief that the President is innocent of collusion after yesterday’s news that Robert Mueller finished his investigation and that a report was handed over to the Justice Department per the rules established for such an inquiry.
Obviously, the main reason is that most Trump supporters do not believe that “their” President has done anything wrong, period. To them, he is the Chosen One who will build the wall on the southern border, “make America great again,” and even though he has flaws up the yazoo, “God chose him to lead our country to undo the damage that that Muslim ‘fake President’ Obummer did over eight years.”
Most “always Trumpers” simply roll their eyes with disbelief - real or affected - at any bad news about Trump, which sadly, tends to be most news reports. Many of them really believe that the “evil Democrats” and their lackeys in “MSM” are corrupt and hate America and everything the country represents. To them, Donald J. Trump is the billionaire upstart that owned “Killary” and the “libtards.”
In short, he’s sort of right-wing America’s Superman; nothing can hurt him in their eyes, and any allegations of wrongdoing, even ones that most people can clearly see that link Donald Trump and his family to wrongdoing, bounce off him as if he were a second Teflon Don.
I don’t pretend to know what Mueller’s final report shows since Attorney General Barr only got it yesterday and none of it has been released to the public. But what has been made public already would be a harbinger of bad tidings to anyone.
Anyone, that is, except for die-hard “always Trumpers.’
Show them this lead from a Jan. 25, 2019 issue of the New York Times:
Since President Trump took office, his administration has been clouded by federal investigations that carry the specter of devastating legal and political consequences.
In the investigation by the special counsel, Robert S. Mueller III, into possible links between the Trump campaign and Russia’s election interference, 34 people and three companies have been charged on more than 100 criminal counts.
Six of them — including three Trump associates — have pleaded guilty, and one, Mr. Trump’s former campaign chairman Paul Manafort, was convicted. Twenty-five others are Russians accused of interfering in the 2016 presidential election.
Do you think they’ll go, “Oh, yeah. That looks bad. Maybe we should not be so loyal to the President…”?
Nope. What they will say, though, is:
“Fake news.”
“Best President EVER!”
“Lock her up!”
Basically, “Always Trumpers” will believe what they want to believe, so even though Mueller’s final report is still not public, they are already claiming victory. Call it wishful thinking, partisan bias, or simply “living in denial,” Trump loyalists refuse to even contemplate the possibility that Donald Trump did anything illegal, much less corrupt.
