At the 115th North American International Toy Fair, which was held in February of 2018 in New York City's Jacob K. Javitz Convention Center, Hasbro unveiled a variety of new products at its showroom. Among these was a "wave" of Star Wars: The Black Series 6-inch scale action figures which depicted characters from Solo: A Star Wars Story, Star Wars: A New Hope, and Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back.  This initial three-figure wave consisted of:

Hasbro shipped these figures, along with other Star Wars-themed toys and collectibles, to stores in the summer, and by July of 2018, they were available in brick-and-mortar stores as well as online retailers such as Amazon, shopDisney, and BigBadToyStore.com. As a result, this trio of figures joined the growing ranks of the popular Star Wars: The Black Series collection that Hasbro introduced in 2015.

"You wanna know how I survived as long as I have? I trust no one. Assume everyone will betray you and you will never be disappointed." Tobias Beckett to Han Solo

To celebrate my recent birthday, I decided to treat myself to a few Star Wars: The Black Series figures, not knowing at the time that a friend was going to surprise me with a getaway to Disney Hollywood Studios and, specifically, Star Wars: Galaxy's Edge. So by the time we drove to the resort which was our "base of operations," I had already gone to shopDisney and ordered (with a birthday discount, to boot!) #68 Tobias Beckett.

Beckett is a survivor, always quietly working out angles to come out ahead. He's assembled a team of specialized scoundrels to carry out risky but profitable heists. ﹘ Packaging blurb, Star Wars: The Black Series #68 Tobias Beckett

The figure, which is from the six-inch scale line (most of my Star Wars toys and collectibles, including my original Kenner Star Wars action figures, vehicles, and playsets, are from the 3.75-inch scale line) is nicely sculpted, painted, and comes with cool accessories.

A survivor who assembled a team of specialized scoundrels to carry out risky but profitable heists, Tobias Beckett is finely detailed in this action figure. Inspired by his appearance in Solo: A Star Wars Story, he boasts film-accurate features. ﹘ shopDisney blurb

The Star Wars: The Black Series red-and-black box contains the following:

  • BlasTech Sideloader DG-29 Heavy Blaster
  • BlasTech RSKF-44 Heavy Blaster

As you can see from the promo shots in this review, Star Wars: The Black Series #69 Tobias Beckett is a nicely rendered action figure based on the badass thief and gun-for-hire played by Woody Harrelson (Cheers, The Messenger, Midway) in Solo: A Star Wars Story.  The figure is based on the character's appearance in the post-Mimban portions of director Ron Howard's 2018 Star Wars Anthology film and is outfitted with an Imperial Army officer's stolen uniform, a trenchcoat reminiscent of Humphrey Bogart's in 1942's Casablanca, and Beckett's twin-holster gunbelt.

Tobias Beckett also comes with two weapons as accessories, a BlasTech Sideloader DG-29 heavy blaster and a BlasTech RSKF-44 Heavy Blaster. These come in handy on Vandor, where Beckett and his gang (which included a young Han Solo and a recently-freed Wookiee named Chewbacca) attempt a daring heist on an Imperial 20-T Railcrawler conveyex transport (aka Conveyex) to steal coaxium for the Crimson Dawn crime syndicate.

My Take

Although I'm a Star Wars fan of the 1977 Generation and my collection tends to reflect an affinity for the first three films, I'm not one of those older fans who look at the new films with disdain or dismay. I see the three Skywalker Saga trilogies, the various TV shows, and the two Star Wars Story films released so far as parts of one huge tapestry. Consequently, I try to acquire collectibles from all of the films whenever possible.

I ordered this figure at shopDisney a few hours before a friend informed me that he was going to take me to Disney Hollywood Studios for my 57th birthday; I'd received an email from Disney informing me that I was entitled to a discount because my birthday was coming up. And because Star Wars collectibles are some of my favorite things to splurge on, I could not refuse.

Before 2017, my main focus of collecting was strictly limited to the 3.75-inch action figures. However, ever since I received a Star Wars: The Black Series 40th Anniversary Display Stand and Luke's Landspeeder as Christmas gifts from my best friend, I've been getting a few of these taller (and therefore more detailed) 6-inch scale figures whenever possible.

I chose Tobias Beckett because I liked his character; Woody Harrelson played Han Solo's mentor in the rancor-eat-rancor world of smuggling and the galactic underworld in Solo: A Star Wars Story as a darker, older version of Solo as played by Harrison Ford in Star Wars: A New Hope. Indeed, there are some echoes of Ford's character's story arc in the last act of Solo, except that instead of becoming a reluctant hero, Beckett reveals himself as a true "I stick my neck out for nobody" type.

Beckett: If you come with us, you're in this life for good.

Like all of the Star Wars: The Black Series figures that I own, #68 Tobias Beckett is a well-designed and executed rendition of a Star Wars film character. Advances in toymaking technology and design have improved the "look" of Star Wars figures since the original manufacturer, Kenner Toys, introduced the "micro-action figure"line in early 1978.

Magic in the details
  • Premium design and detail
  • Includes two character accessories
  • Multiple points of articulation
  • Inspired by Solo: A Star Wars Story
  • Part of the Star Wars: The Black Series by Hasbro
Although the points of articulation (joints and swivel/sockets) do have a "toy-like" look (there's simply no way to avoid that, especially in a figure of this size), they do allow for more life-like poses than the original 1978 action figures, which only had five points of articulation in each figure.

The larger size (six-inch scale versus three and three-quarter inch scale) also allows Hasbro's sculptors to give the figures incredibly accurate detailing. This is important to fans, especially adults and teenagers who judge their collectibles not just by how cool the figures are but also how closely they resemble the characters they represent. It's easy to do that with droids, stormtroopers, and masked characters such as Darth Vader and Kylo Ren, but it's harder to accomplish with humans like Han Solo (Harrison Ford or Alden Ehrenreich) or Tobias Beckett.

I'm happy to report that Star Wars: The Black Series Tobias Beckett is a good rendering of Woody Harrelson's character from Solo: A Star Wars Story. The detailing, especially of Beckett's grimly determined facial expression, is incredibly life-like and evokes the character's reputation as a dangerous and deadly gunfighter-for-hire.

Star Wars: The Black Series Tobias Beckett is, in my opinion, a collectible that is worthy of adding to anyone's stash of Star Wars collectibles and toys.
