Trump supporters: Why do you support this reckless, feckless Administration?
I must be one of the densest persons in the United States,
because I simply don’t understand why President Trump’s supporters still, you
know, support his Administration.
Over the past three weeks, Mr. Trump, advised by the
Machiavellian Stephen K. Bannon and abetted by such luminaries as Kellyanne (“Alternative
Facts”) Conway and Sean Spicer, has done more to undermine American democracy –
and its standing in the world – than any President since Richard M. Nixon.
Consider. Since President Trump took office on January 20,
he and his staff have:
- Called the judicial branch a “threat to national security” - In a Twitter post dated February 5, Mr. Trump wrote: Just cannot believe a judge would put our country in such peril. If something happens blame him and court system. People pouring in. Bad!
- Declared that they will label any negative reporting on what the Trump White House does as “fake news," even if it is not actually fake news - In a recent conversation with conservative commentator Michael Medved, deputy assistant to the President Sebastian Gholka said, “"There is a monumental desire on behalf of the majority of the media, not just the pollsters, the majority of the media to attack a duly elected President in the second week of his term." Gholka is a former editor at the alt-right “news site” Breitbart, just like President Trump’s chief strategist Bannon. Both of Mr. Trump’s advisers consider the “mainstream media” to be the Administration’s opposition.
Per CNN, Gholka went on to tell Medved: "That's how
unhealthy the situation is and until the media understands how wrong that
attitude is, and how it hurts their credibility, we are going to continue to
say, 'fake news.' I'm sorry, Michael. That's the reality.”
- Had to “ask” Michael Flynn, the National Security Adviser, to resign after he allegedly deceived Vice President Mike Pence about a conversation with Russia’s ambassador after the election (but before Mr. Trump’s swearing in)– The former Army general, who was fired in 2014 from his post as the director of the Defense Intelligence Agency, was forced to resign from his post as National Security Adviser on February 13, 2017. According to CNN, “(Flynn’s) departure came just after reports surfaced that the Justice Department warned the Trump administration last month that Flynn misled administration officials regarding his communications with the Russian ambassador to the United States and was potentially vulnerable to blackmail by the Russians.”
According to the latest Gallup polls, these missteps by the
new Administration have caused Mr. Trump’s approval ratings to stay at record
lows. As of February 14, the President’s popularity is dismally low; only 40%
of Americans feel that the President is doing a good job.
With all these strikes against Mr. Trump and his White House
team, I find it hard to believe that Trump’s supporters really think he will
make America great again. And yet, some do.
I’ll write about that topic
tomorrow.
