Talking About Conservative Hypocrisy: My Reply to 'Why Do Democrats Hate When People Support Our President?'

Image
On the question-and-answer site Quora, Trump supporter Lauren Davis asks: Why do Democrats hate when people support our president? Don’t they know they make our country look bad? My reply:  Before I give you a proper answer, let me ask you this: Do Trump supporters see the hypocrisy in asking questions such as  Why do Democrats hate when people support our president? Don’t they know they make our country look bad ,  when many of them not only disrespected the previous President between 2008 and 2017 but depict Democratic Party politicians and voters as traitors, “socialists,” and overall evil destroyers of the United States? See, one of the great tragedies about our representative style of democracy is that it has gradually devolved into a vitriolic team sport. A sport, dare I say, where it is a zero-sum game of “my team is better, so yours is for losers.” Partisan rivalry in America, of course, is nothing new. George Washington did not like the party system and

Responding to the Cult-45: My Reply to 'Now that the Mueller report has been finally investigating, do you think the Democrats are a bunch of clowns?'

On Quora, Trump supporter Larry "Two Accounts" Walden asks this incredibly rude question about the Mueller Report and the Democratic Party: Now that the Mueller report has been finally investigating, do you think the Democrats are a bunch of clowns? Here's my reply: This question, in all frankness, is rife with far too many issues that make it hard for anyone to understand, much less answer it in a mature, rational way. The first half,  Now that the Mueller report has been finally investigating,  makes no sense whatsoever. The two-volume Mueller Report is not a sentient, self-aware entity that can conduct an investigation on its own; therefore, it can’t investigate anything or anyone. I’m guessing that what the Trump supporter who wrote this pseudo-question really meant to say is,  Now that the Mueller investigation has come to a close, do you think the Democrats are a bunch of clowns? Which, of course, brings me to the crux of the matter. Obviously, th

Talking About Quora: Why does Quora allow so many loaded anti-Trump questions that obviously are not looking for genuine answers?

If you are a regular reader of A Certain Point of View. you know that one of the blog's regular features is Talking About.... in which I share some of my answers to political questions that I've run across on Quora, a popular questions-and-answers website. I am not, or at least I didn't use to be, a political junkie, but ever since Donald Trump was elected to the White House, I express my beliefs and, more often than not, vent my anger over Trump's behavior and policies in those answers, especially when I'm replying to obviously loaded pro-Trump "questions." Yesterday, for instance, I ran into this masterpiece of "faux outrage" from Charles Arnold, a South Dakota pastor and Trump fan: Why does Quora allow so many loaded anti-Trump questions that obviously are not looking for genuine answers? I replied:  Well, for one thing, the concept of Quora, at least according to its mission statement, is to promote the sharing of useful informati

Replying to Insincere Questions: Do you believe Democrats will ever accept that Hillary Clinton lost fair and square to President Donald J. Trump and actually give our President an honest chance to show how governing works when we all work together as a cohesive unit?

This question showed up on my Quora feed yesterday: Do you believe Democrats will ever accept that Hillary Clinton lost fair and square to President Donald J. Trump and actually give our President an honest chance to show how governing works when we all work together as a cohesive unit? I, of course, replied: I can’t speak for all Democratic Party voters. Nor can I claim to speak for most Democratic Party voters. Hell, I can’t even speak for all the 56-year-old male Democratic Party members that live in my metro area, much less my neighborhood. I can only answer on my behalf. First of all, let me congratulate you on writing a prime example of a loaded question. It sounds polite enough, but (a) it’s based on the question writer’s belief that the 2016 Presidential election was fair and honest, and (b) it’s fawning almost to the point that I can hear my eyeballs click as they roll in their sockets. Second, this Democratic voter from the great state of Florida acc

Talking About Politics: How much support will Donald Trump lose if Mueller reveals unequivocal evidence that he conspired with Russia to win the election?

How much support will Donald Trump lose if Mueller reveals unequivocal evidence that he conspired with Russia to win the election? Based on my interactions with Trump supporters, as well as observations of what they say on Facebook, Twitter, and, yes, Quora, I’d say that the current President will lose less than 1 percent of his supporters  if Mueller provides them with unequivocal evidence that he colluded with Russia to win the election. Consider, Trump supporters have so far stayed loyal to Donald John Trump, Sr. for over two years  in spite  of the firing and/or resignations of two National Security Advisers, one Attorney General, one Secretary of State, two communications directors, one Secretary of Defense, and one Press Secretary for a plethora of reasons. In addition, several individuals who were investigated for Russiagate and election-related shenanigans have been arrested, pleaded guilty, or made plea deals with Special Counsel Robert Mueller and other entities, inclu

Dispatches from Trump's America: The American nightmare continues

"I do solemnly swear (or affirm) that I will faithfully execute the  Office  of  President  of the United States, and will to the best of my ability, preserve, protect and defend the Constitution of the United States." - Presidential Oath of Office Only two months and three days have passed since Donald J. Trump was sworn in as the 45th President of the United States. That's a short span of time, really,  but to many Americans, it feels like we're in a national nightmare far worse than the Watergate scandal that destroyed Richard Nixon's Presidency - and further eroded public confidence in politicians, the two-party system, and American democracy itself.  During his short time in office, Mr. Trump has managed to achieve something no other President had done in the 228 years and 19 days (or, if you prefer, 83,294 days) since President George Washington swore to protect and defend the Constitution of the United States. In 62 days, Mr. Trump has generated the

What do Trump supporters want?

After the announcement that retired Army General Michael Flynn resigned on Monday night from his post as President Trump’s National Security Adviser as a result of the Administration’s first major scandal, I wrote a blog post titled  “Trump supporters: Why do you support this reckless, feckless Administration?” Like most blog posts with a political theme, the title is more of a rhetorical question than an actual query. My blog, “A Certain Point of View” doesn’t have a large following (only 13 people have signed on as “followers”), and readers rarely leave any feedback in the “Comments” section.  I didn’t really expect to get any honest, intelligent, or coherent answers that go beyond the usual “He’s only been President for less than a month. Give him a chance!” or “He is a successful businessman with a proven track record of success. He will get things done.” And, to be honest, so far I have not even gotten any of those comments, either. Still, I do wonder why President T
